agency

IPA is proud to be the first agency in the world to represent intimacy professionals in the film and television industry. Below are descriptions of the types of professionals that we represent. If you’re interested in working with one of our clients or would like to learn more about their services, please contact agency@ipainternational.org.

Intimacy Coordinators

Intimacy coordinators ensure that actors are safe on set during the filming of simulated sex, nudity, and other intimate scenes while still bringing the director’s creative vision to life and telling the story. In order to do this, some of the services that an intimacy coordinator brings to a show include:

  • Facilitating dialogue between the actors and director about their comfort level with the intimate content of a scene

  • Preparing actors emotionally for intense intimacy scenes, such as simulated sexual assault, and providing them with support throughout the process, as well as emotional aftercare if needed

  • Making sure that during the filming of a scene the boundaries of the actors are not being crossed and that they remain safe throughout, both physically and emotionally

  • Providing a safe environment in which actors can do their work

  • Ensuring that closed set and SAG-AFTRA nudity and simulated sex contractual obligations are followed

  • Serving as an on-set advocate and ally for LGBTQIA+ cast members

  • Choreographing simulated sex scenes to enhance believability

  • Coordinating with departments such as costumes and makeup to make sure that the actors are provided with appropriate nudity garments, barriers, and prosthetics

In addition to providing productions with intimacy coordinators, IPA consults with television networks and movie studios on how to implement the use of intimacy coordinators on all of their productions and build an internal protocol for how to handle scenes of intimacy that is customized to fit the studio.

Trans consultants and gender Consultants

Have a show that features transgender characters or employs transgender actors? Consider hiring a transgender consultant. IPA trans consultants are people who identify as transgender and have lived experience as to what it’s like to be trans in our society. Gender consultants are able to provide productions with information and feedback about a variety of gender identities, including being non-binary, gender fluid, gender non-conforming, etc. Some of the services that trans consultants and gender consultants provide include consulting on scripts to help shows avoid tropes and problematic constructs about trans and gender diverse people, as well as acting as an advocate on set for trans and LGBTQIA+ talent. As an advocate, trans and gender consultants ensure that the set is a welcoming space for gender diverse cast members by making sure appropriate changing rooms and bathrooms are available, and by providing sensitivity training to the cast and crew.

expert INtimacy consultants

The last thing any film maker wants is to create a TV show or film that causes backlash in the communities it’s supposed to be depicting because it’s not accurate. The best way to make sure one’s project is representative of the people it is portraying when it comes to intimate topics is by hiring an expert intimacy consultant. IPA is home to experts on a variety of topics that include kink, BDSM, polyamory, ethical non-monogamy, and swinging. Our expert consultants are available to read scripts and provide feedback on authenticity, as well as to provide workshops to actors on specific skill sets, such as how to safely and properly engage in BDSM activities like rope bondage.
