Workshop Descriptions

Part 1: Disentangling Gender, Sex, and Sexuality

Date: Sunday, October 11, 2020

Time: 11am PT - 2pm PT

Location: Online

Do you feel confused about the difference between gender and biological sex? Or perhaps you understand the difference on a surface level but still have lingering questions or want to solidify your understanding? If so, this workshop is for you. During this class, Terra (they/them) will disentangle the concepts of gender, biological sex, and sexual orientation from one another. They will uncover the lies we have been told about the biology of sex, demystify the concept of gender, and reframe sexual orientation with a more nuanced understanding that goes beyond the framework of gender-based attraction.

You will come away from this workshop with a deep understanding of gender, biological sex, and sexual orientation, and feel confident in your ability to discuss these topics with others. It will also give you the necessary information to be an informed ally and an advocate for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Attending this workshop is highly recommended for anyone planning to take parts 2 and 3 of the workshop series as it will give you a strong foundation for getting the most out of the other classes. This workshop is for intimacy coordinators and filmmakers, including AD’s, producers, directors, writers, costumers, etc.

Part 2: Let’s Talk About Transition

Date: Sunday, October 18, 2020

Time: 11am PT - 2pm PT

Location: Online

In this workshop, participants will develop an understanding of the ins and outs of coming out and transitioning, and the physical, emotional, social, and medical transitions that LGBTQIA+ folks can go through. Terra (they/them) will dive into a myriad of topics related to transition, including but not limited to:

  • Re-defining “coming out”

  • Gender dysphoria, body dysphoria, and social dysphoria

  • Addressing gatekeeping and the idea of “complete transition”

  • Body modification, including hormones and surgical interventions

  • The nuances of being trans and having/navigating cis-privilege

This class will give participants a deep understanding of transition, as well as normalize transition in both directions, from cis/heterosexual to trans/queer and vice versa. The knowledge, perspective, and expertise that Terra will share on this topic is powerful and not to be missed.

This class is a must-take for intimacy coordinators and filmmakers who work with trans performers and/or on projects with trans characters.

Part 3: Moving Beyond Heteronormativity

Date: Sunday, October 25, 2020

Time: 11am PT - 2pm PT

Location: Online

Whether we are aware of it or not, we are raised in a society that assumes heterosexuality is the standard, and this is reflected in the media that we make. In this class, participants will broaden their perspectives on sexuality and gender through:

  • Understanding the gender binary and its implications for the standardization of sexuality

  • Examining the relationship between heterosexuality and gender norms and roles

  • Breaking down heterocentrism

  • Exploring the standardized heterosexual script and its impact on sex

  • Discussing how representation in media and popular culture leads to standardization and how this wounds us all, even heterosexual people

During this class, participants will also learn about how to talk about consent and sexual touch in an affirming way with LGBTQIA+ folks and avoid projecting heterosexuality onto queer sex.

This class is highly recommended for intimacy coordinators and filmmakers who want to support the telling of queer stories in a manner that is accurate and authentic.
